My Journey as a Student in Yanbian University and China

A journey starts with an inspiration and inspiration for me is my dear friends who did there PhD from China, According Chinese Proverb “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”. Everyone’s life has its own story. I begin my story today when I start my journey to China. A journey that changed my life for the better.

My name is Ullah Obaid currently working as Assistant Professor at University of Poonch, Rawalakot, Pakistan. I came to China in 2014 to pursue my doctoral study on a Chinese government scholarship at Yanbian University, Yanji City, Jilin province. I still remember that once I landed in Yanji Airport on August 25, was well received by International office of Yanbian University and greeted by my supervisor Professor Nanzhu Fang and Lab mates. In the second week after my arrival in China I started to go to university and learn Chinese characters. My love for Chinese culture was increased many times once I was introduced to calligraphy, Chinese literature, martial arts, tea culture. Learning the Chinese language with characters gave me a strong foundation for my doctoral degree program. During this time I enjoyed writing complex Chinese characters. Wearing traditional Confucius gowns in different colors and writing the Chinese characters was an unforgettable experience.

The International Students Office at Yanbian University plays a vital role in enhancing the experience of international students. I am very thankful to all the staff in international students’ office for arranging various visit programs that allow us to explore China’s rich culture, history, and landscape. These visit programs help me to immerse in Chinese culture while also making new friends and connections. For instance, the office often organizes trips to historical landmarks, such as the visit to Chang Bai Shang, Yanbian Museum, and Jilin City. Through these visits, I gain a deeper understanding of China’s heritage and traditions.

From 2015 to 2018, During my Doctoral Degree Program, I followed my supervisor’s requirement and plan to study in Animal Genetics, Breeding and reproduction. I was assigned to experimental research programs. Therefore, I spent almost every day on the research work. In spite of hard work, it gives me a sense of fulfillment. I would like to thank my supervisor and Professor Dr Nanzhu Fang and Co Supervisor Professor Dr Zhongshu Li for giving me the opportunity to participate in NSFC project of the Department of Animals science, collage of agriculture, Yanbian University (No. 31360546). Under the supervision of Professor Fang, I crafted and delivered standards-aligned lesson plans, employing hands-on experiments, interactive demonstrations, and inquiry-based learning to foster active engagement and cater to diverse learning styles. My Ph.D. thesis focused on the “effect of pterostilbene on the oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress in early mouse embryos. I published several research articles and present abstract in international conference related to my Ph.D. study at Yanbian University.

During my stay at Yanbian University, I am proficient in various laboratory techniques, including PCR, Western Blot, RNA Extraction, Gel Electrophoresis, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, Blood Analysis, Cell Culture, Immunocytochemistry, Transfection, Electroporation, DNA Extraction, Single Cell Isolation, In Vitro Fertilization, Embryo Transfer. I also learned different software such as SPSS, GraphPad Prism, Microsoft Office, and Python (beginner level)

The Chinese government scholarship program gives me and many students from developing countries an access to more learning resources in this large and resource-rich country as well as an opportunity to communicate with the world and make progress together with the world. I am happy to become part of this great Yanbian University and great nation which helps to push me toward my life achievement. I really have no words on how to thank the people of China. I am glad that my journey begins in Yanbian, China to this beautiful Yanji city.
